The Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Oyo State, Dr Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed, has emphasised that the institution would not compromise the standards set by National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Dr Abdul-Hameed stated this recently after a two-day resource inspection programme organised by the duo of the Polytechnic and the NBTE at the temporary site of the institution in Iresa-Pupa, Surulere local government area of Oyo State.
It would be recalled that the Polytechnic had earlier signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Onipaanu in Surulere local government area of the state for collaboration on the use of facilities that would ensure effective academic activities in the new institution.
The programmes inspected included ND in Accountancy; Business Administration and Management; Public Administration; Office Technology and Management; Statistics; Computer Science; Science Laboratory Technology; Hospitality, Leisure and Tourism; Computer Engineering Technology; Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology; Agricultural Technology; Urban and Regional Planning as well as Estate Management and Valuation.
It was reported that the teams of experts and academics inspected all the 13 academic Departments, Rectory, Registry, Library, Department of General Studies, permanent site, among others.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, who was represented by Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Dasauki, said the exercise became imperative in order to build a virile institution.
According to Prof. Dasauki, “This is a very good outing for us and I want to believe that you will take all the comments. From my own assessment, you have done well. And as Director said, it is not to bring any department down but to have good and quality products.
“By the time you go back, look at all the corrections on all the comments you have to make use of. It will only take you three to six months and you are done and that is the most important thing.
“For us on this side, we wish you well and this night, I am going to report to my friend, the Executive Secretary of NBTE that we have completed our assignment and from my own assessment, you have done very well.”
Also speaking, the Director of Programmes of the NBTE, Arch. Oghoh Ngbede, added, “We expect the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LAUTECH not to be more than two years. Hopefully, the initial accreditation will take place during the third semester of the pioneer students. Please, pay critical attention to the issues raised and make us all proud.”
Responding, Dr Abdul-Hameed commended the thoroughness of the exercise, noting the Polytechnic would not compromise standards.
He said, “I appreciate the NBTE under the leadership of Prof. Idris Bugaje, ably represented by Prof. Ahmed Sadauki. The Executive Secretary has been encouraging us since this journey started.
“I sincerely appreciate the Director of Programmes, Arch. Ogoh Ngbede for painstakingly driving the process till this moment. All your observations are well noted and if there is anybody that will compromise standard, it is not my humble self.”
Assuring the inspectors that he would maximise his experience, the rector added, “I have been in the system for years. I have been part of several accreditation exercises myself and I assure you all that the observations you made, we will try our possible best to correct them accordingly and put all measures in place to ensure proper arrangements
“I was Director of Quality Assurance at the Federal Polytechnic, Ede and you have been there several times. I have worked with about five rectors and acting rectors but the most impacting of them who have trained me so well was Dr J. S. Oke and you all know at NBTE what Dr . J. S. Oke stood for when he was the Rector.”
“All the observations are well noted, whether in term of human resources or physical facilities. All necessary measures are going to be taken very soon.”
“On skill acquisition, I have always been saying skill acquisition will stand out our students and make them functional citizens. It was only Federal Polytechnic, Ayede that consciously made Multi-Skills Acquisition Centre an item in her 2023 budget. It will interest you that the National Assembly equally buys into this initiative”
“I want to once again appreciate the assessors, the resource persons and all for your time, efforts and intellectual investment in this inspection. I wish you safe journey to your various destinations.”
The exit programme was attended by the Polytechnic Registrar, Mr Akin Odesola; Librarian, Dr Samuel Ogunniyi; Bursar, Alhaja Rashidat Oladepo and staff of the Polytechnic.
Addressing a delegation of the NBTE team in his palace, the Aresa-Pupa of Iresa-Pupa, Oba Moses Olayiwola Ajiboye III, assured the Federal Government and the Polytechnic of maximum cooperation.
The monarch said, “We want to use this medium to express our profound gratitude to every member of the resource inspection team, together with the principal officers and the Federal Government for embarking developmental project like this. We know that this add to the growth and economy of our town.
“We now promise that we will cooperate with the management, staff, students and the entire polytechnic community as a peace loving people.”
