Lagos State Government has expressed its priority for technical and vocational education to create more job opportunities as part of efforts to reduce youth unemployment in the state.
This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos by Ganiu Lawal, Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Education.
According to the statement, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, stated this during his weekly, unscheduled visit to schools across the State.
Alli-Balogun, addressing students of Lagos State Technical College Ado-Soba, along Lagos-Badagry Expressway, encouraged the students to show more commitment and see themselves as business owners in the nearest future.
“The State will continue to support graduates of technical colleges to be self-reliant with skills and resources to become employers of labour.
“The State technical colleges are positioned to train students not only for technical expertise but also to be creative and venture into becoming start ups combining technical skills with entrepreneurship.
“I urge you to stay out of trouble, remain focused and ensure you come out tops in your skill trainings and serve as role models to others who are coming behind you.
“Stay off vices like bullying, drug abuse and cultism, I encourage you to always share your thoughts and experience of the state interventions with your parents,” he added.
The Commissioner reiterated that the state Government had provided tools needed for the students to succeed, adding, “we will not relent in providing more if necessary.”
Other schools visited were Festac Junior and Senior Grammar Schools, Sari Iganmu Senior Secondary School and five other schools within the complex at Coker, Orile.
The Commissioner declared that there was the need for all hand to be on deck to provide quality education for every child in the state.
He charged Principals and Vice Principals to lead by example and share experience of classroom management by teaching the students for a minimum of 6-8 periods daily.
According to him, this will go a long way to also showcase leadership qualities to be emulated by young teachers.
