On a sunny September morning in 2022, I landed in Moscow. This trip marked my return to academic life after a 13-year break. The dream of earning a master’s degree abroad always seemed distant, and the goal was fraught with difficulty and uncertainty. Stepping onto Russian soil, I felt a mixture of excitement and fear. In the very heart of Moscow, in the interweaving of old and new culture, I am not just a student. I am a citizen of the digital world, ready to embrace every experience that travel has to offer. This adventure, filled with both trials and triumphs, became an important chapter in my life. It shaped me.
Shaky start
The trip to Moscow was not smooth. From the moment I decided to pursue this dream, obstacles seemed to arise at every turn. Financial, logistical problems, the enormous burden of resuming formal education after such a long break – all this made me doubt that I would even make it to the day of the flight. But the unwavering support of my family, especially my wife, and the help of close allies in both industry and academia turned what had seemed like a misfortune into a blessing. Their support combined with divine intervention pushed me forward.
First impressions
At Domodedovo airport I was met by my friend Stephen Obiri, a native of Ghana who had lived in Moscow for more than five years. Meeting him was a soothing balm for my frayed nerves. The thought of having to navigate the city and all its diversity without speaking Russian was daunting. Stephen knew his way around Moscow well and was fluent in the language – this gave him a reassuring sense of security. On the way from the airport to the hostel, I admired the cityscape. The combination of historic architecture and modern skyscrapers in the car window painted a picture of a city that was culturally rich and vibrantly modern.
Check-in
Another pleasant surprise was the experience of living in a hostel. The efficiency and friendliness of the staff exceeded my expectations. From the hostel manager to the passport inspector, everyone I met was helpful and hospitable. Their prompt assistance simplified the registration process and made it easier for me to acclimatize to my new environment. Stephen’s role as my translator was invaluable. With his help, I easily completed the initial formalities. However, as soon as he left, I realized the real complexity of my situation. Communication and navigation in everyday life without knowing Russian seemed impossible to me. Russians naturally assume that you speak their language, and communication often began in Russian – I had to keep up.
Digital society and a new chapter
Despite the initial difficulties, meeting other international students who spoke English was a significant relief. They introduced me to various language translation apps that have become my go-to tools. This technological assistance underscored a fundamental truth about modern life in Moscow: digital devices are essential for social interaction and mobility.
As I settled into my new life, it became clear that I was in a technology-driven world. Citizens and foreigners alike relied on digital devices for everything from communications to transportation. Over the next two years, I will become part of this digitally integrated society and learn to use technology to overcome language barriers and enrich my academic and social experiences.
There is no doubt that my trip to Moscow demonstrates the true power of tirelessness and support. The path was full of uncertainties, but the support of loved ones and the kindness of new acquaintances turned my fears into optimism. Every day in this vibrant city brings new challenges and opportunities, reinforcing my belief that dreams, no matter how distant, are achievable with determination and help from those who care.
I anticipate
My journey in Moscow is not over, and as I enter a new day, I am full of hope and zeal. The trip demonstrated the power of determination and the value of support from loved ones. Every day brings new opportunities for learning and progress, strengthening my belief that patience and faith always lead to new achievements – lead to a dream.
