By Josiah OLAYIWOLA
Look at what you’d reclaimed
The bones after you’d fed with flesh
Cracking the bones for marrows in roles
Like a thundering rain you cracked them all
For what you had voraciously taken away
Other dogs mimicking the cracking of the bones
As to be fed with such a huge flesh and bones
Not being fed but ate up your given instruction in haste
O an over-fed dog, the flesh is for all and sundry
Your pot-belly shown an ingrate existence
You’re far from being good to others with flat tommy
Their joy is waned when you blocked the staples
Never be happy for today’s ‘well-fed’
The sky that splashes rain pays for sun’s ray
If your today is so colorful, tomorrow brings darkness
And your today runs for tomorrow to spread darkness.
Summary of the Poem
The poem is a satirical one and it lampoons the callous and hostile relationship between the poor masses and the rich. The politicians (the rich) hijack the bones (little resources) that the poor masses want to feed on and whereas the politicians had already been fed on the flesh.
The ‘flesh’ here symbolises the national cake that should be for all citizens but the few rich have access to it and the bones (leftovers) that the poor masses wanted to feed on are still hijacked by the rich who had already fed on the flesh.
The rich are now happy because of the surplus resources they have today and not minding what tomorrow may bring. If tomorrow brings bad luck (darkness), their today will never be remembered again .
