The decadence in Nigeria’s political system has been attributed poor political education and political culture.
The national chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, stated this on a Nigerian Television Authority’s (NTA) discussion programme, “Tuesday Live”, monitored by PanNigerian News.
Alkali said that poor political culture and general political education constitutes a bane to the country’s drive to political emancipation.
Alkali, a professor of political science, was the former political adviser to the former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Alkali said, “You are talking about primaries, congresses, general elections, convention and party administration. Do they educate people to know all these? It is both the general education and the political culture that are lacking
“The worst is that in the absence of this political culture, then, we have divisive politics.
He decried that the absence of ideological orientation of the parties has made it impossible for people to know about the various parties’ ideologies.
“Let’s talk about all the earlier generation politicians. When they moved, people followed them.
“When we started talking about NNPP and people followed because they believed in the leadership of Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwakanso and other group of people in this movement.
“In this country, we need laws to curtail the excesses. It is one thing to have party’s constitution, it is another thing to have party manifesto and it is yet another thing to implement it.
The don, who expressed optimism in the people’s political consciousness, maintained that”In Nigeria, thank God political consciousness is rising very fast. Very soon, it will be that anybody who offers himself for the service of the country will be held accountable to the people. There should be a reorganisation and proper reorientation. The parties, governments, election umpire, security agencies have a role to play. People are fighting over nothing because political culture is weak.
“Some leaders want people to be in darkness so that they can continue manipulating them.
“The parties must take responsibility to put the education as priority and take poverty.”
