Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, have lost one of their twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died at the age of 21 months.
The sad news was confirmed in a statement released on Thursday by Omawumi Ogbe on behalf of the family.
According to the statement, the child passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, after a brief illness.
“We’re deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege’s twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed on Wednesday, 7th of January 2026, after a brief illness. He was 21 months old,” the statement read.
The family described the loss as devastating and appealed to the public to respect their privacy as they grieve. They also requested prayers and understanding during this difficult period.
It was reported that the family is deeply affected by the tragedy and has chosen to mourn in private.
Adichie, author of acclaimed novels such as “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Americanah”, is one of Nigeria’s most celebrated literary figures and a globally respected voice in literature and social commentary.
News of the death has since drawn an outpouring of condolences from writers, readers, and admirers around the world.
