
Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, as public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
Pan-Nigeran News reports that Democracy Day has, over the years, been commemorated on May 29 until the Muhammadu Buhari administration started officially recognisung June 12 as Democracy Day in 2019, following the declaration in June 2018.
That year marked the first time the public holiday was shifted from May 29 to June 12.
June 12 was regareded as the freest and fairest election to be held in the history of Nigeria but was annuled by the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida adninistration in 1993.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of 26 years of an uninterrupted civil rule.
In the statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, June 12 represents a historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign and peace is sustained and the future assured.
It added that the last 26 years tells the story of resilience, strength, courage and a hope renewed than ever, noting that democracy is sustained with open doors for further improvement.
The Minister reiterates the commitment of the Renewed Hope government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the universal value of democracy that is based on freely-expressed will of the people in determining Nigeria’s political, economic, social and cultural systems.
