
The Department of Computer Engineering, School of Engineering Technology has emerged champion of the 2nd Rector’s Cup Football Tournament at the Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Oyo State, after a tense and thrilling final against the defending champions, Department of Computer Science, School Science and Technology.
The final match, held at the Polytechnic’s Sports Arena, ended in a goalless draw after 90 minutes of action-packed football.
The deadlock led to a dramatic penalty shootout, where Computer Engineering edged out Computer Science to claim the coveted trophy.
The final match drew a large crowd of students, staff, and football enthusiasts from within and outside the campus.
Present at the event were the Rector, Engr. Dr. Taofeek Abdul-Hameed, who was accompanied by other Principal Officers of the institution, including Deputy Rector (Axademic), Mr. Azeez Olasunkanmi Ojo; the Registrar, Mr. Akin Odesola, reoresented by Mr. Olutayo Ajala; the Bursar, Mrs. Rashidat Titilola Oladepo; and the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Samuel Ogunniyi, who waa represented by Mr. Dare Adeleke.
In his address after the match, the Rector commended the sportsmanship and dedication displayed by all participating teams throughout the tournament.
He particularly praised the resilience and discipline shown by the finalists and acknowledged the efforts of the tournament’s organizers, especially the Student Affairs Division.
Engr. Dr. Abdul-Hameed also appreciated Aresa-Pupa of Iresa-Pupa, Oba Moses Olayiwola JP, Ajiboye III for his continued support toward the development of the Polytechnic and its activities.
He noted that events like the Rector’s Cup not only promote physical fitness and talent discovery but also strengthen unity among students and staff.
“This competition is more than just football; it is a symbol of teamwork, discipline, and the pursuit of excellence. I commend both departments for putting up such a remarkable performance, and I congratulate the new champions, Computer Engineering,” the Rector said.
The Rector’s Cup, now in its second edition, has fast become a signature sporting event at the Federal Polytechnic Ayede, providing a platform for discovering sporting talents and enhancing student engagement.
The Computer Engineering team celebrated their hard-earned victory with cheers and songs, while the Computer Science team, despite the loss, was applauded for their fighting spirit and respectable defense of their previous title.
