The Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Oyo State has commended the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Land Transport, Senator Fatai Buhari, for immortalising the immediate past Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, with a 250-computer ICT Centre.
The senator who represents Oyo North senatorial district in the Senate facilitated the ICT Centre from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
Having seen the need to immortalise the 20th Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Oyewumi who joined his ancestors on December 12, 2021 at the age of 95 years, Senator Buhari named the facility in honour of the late monarch who reigned for 47 years begining from 1973.
The facility, “Oba (Dr) Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III ICT Centre”, would be used as the ICT Resource Centre of the Polytechnic.
Speaking at the inauguration of the facility in Ogbomoso during the week, the Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, Professor Dakas C. J. Dakas, expressed the institution’s deepest appreciation to Ogbomoso community for the warm reception accorded the new Polytechnic since inception.
Professor Dakas, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who is a former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General in Plateau State emphasised the impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), saying that the Centre would afford the prospective students of the Polytechnic opportunities to explore the digital world to their advantage.
A release by the institution’s Corporate Communications Committee quotes Professor Dakas as saying “On behalf of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Oyo State, we congratulate the facilitator of the project, Senator Fatai Buhari on this milestone.”
“The first time I met Senator Buhari, one of the first things that struck me about him was his humility.”
Professor Dakas, who was accompanied by other members of the Governing Council; the Rector, Dr Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed and other principal officers, therefore, appealed to the Polytechnic and Ogbomoso communities to sustain the legacy.
According to him, “I would like to appeal to the beneficiary communities which include the Ogbomoso community, staff and incoming students of the Polytechnic. We believe they will be able to benefit from this excellent facility. It is one thing to attract a project of this magnitude and it is another thing to not only utilise it, but also to maintain it. Maintenance is absolutely important. We are in a digital world. The present is ICT; the future is ICT.”
The legal icon asserted that what Senator Buhari had done is not only to address the need of the community now but also to look into the future to make sure the community keys into the global trend.
