A former Vice Chancellor of Bowen University, Iwo and Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State, Emeritus Prof. Timothy Olagbemiro, has called on Oyo State government led by Governor Seyi Makinde to rescind its decision to move the Faculty of Agriculture of Ladode Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso to Iseyin.
Olagbemiro, a 1984 professor of Chemistry at Bayero University, Kano, said the government’s decision was against the choice that the faculty’s students made to study in Ogbomoso, the second largest city in the state.
He stated this while speaking to newsmen in Ogbomoso recently at the end of an education summit organised by Ogbomoso Academics and Ogbomoso Community Youth Forum (OCYF)
Olagbemiro, who is the Chairman of Ogbomoso Academics, said, “It is not ideal. If the state government needs a university and has the resources, then, it should create a new one. Why will students have to be bungled to places where never chose.
“For crying out loud, they chose LAUTECH, Ogbomoso and not LAUTECH, Iseyin. How do you want the parents and guardians to feel, taking their children and wards to another enclave.
“Many of the parents and guardians have raised security issues.”
Describing the silence of some leaders as politically motivated, Olagbemiro said, “Politicians are politicians. They may not want to say the truth. They won’t talk to the government because they want to ‘chop money’. Our politicians should try and say the truth.
“It is unfair for students to come to Ogbomoso and be asked to move to Iseyin all of a sudden.”
The don, advising the government to be sensitive to people’s positions on the relocation saga, said, “The government should be sensitive to people. These are citizens. The government should not say it has the power and uses it anyhow it likes.
“The government should give them choices to make between going to Iseyin or staying in Ogbomoso. It is clear that majority are saying ‘no.'”
