The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken another step toward the full restoration of its Student Union with the election of new principal officers for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The election, held on Friday, produced Bolaji Akinpelu of the Faculty of Arts as President and Daniel Solomon of the Faculty of Computing and Informatics as General Secretary of the Students’ Union.
The poll which was coordinated by the University’s Directorate of Student Affairs under the supervision of the Dean, Prof. Johnson Agunsoye, took place at the Common Room of Moremi Hall on the University’s campus.
According to the University authorities, the election involved only the current Faculty Presidents, in line with the transitional guidelines designed to gradually restore the Students’ Union’s full democratic structure.
At the end of the exercise, Akinpelu secured nine votes to emerge as President, while Solomon also polled nine votes to become the Union’s General Secretary.
Speaking on the conduct of the election, Professor Agunsoye described the exercise as a fulfilment of the promise earlier made by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Folasade Ogunsola, to facilitate the return of the Students’ Union.
He explained that the restoration process is aimed at strengthening student representation and leadership development within the institution.
“The restoration of the Union is intended not only to provide a platform for the student population to express their views, but also to prepare students for leadership responsibilities and encourage them to become solution-driven leaders,” he said.
The Student Union of the University of Lagos was suspended for nine years following internal crises, violent protests, and administrative concerns over governance and campus security.
In recent years, the University management under Ogunsola initiated a phased process to restore the union, beginning with the election of faculty-level student leaders and the establishment of guidelines for a transition to a fully functional Students’ Union government.
The latest election of a President and General Secretary represents a significant milestone in that process, signaling the university administration’s intention to reinstate full student representation and participatory governance on campus.
