The National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCN) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest and prosecute killers of an Igbo trader in Ogun market.
The NISCN also strongly condemned the attack, describing the incident as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a threat to the safety of informal workers across the country.”
In a statement signed by the President of the NISCN, Engr. Dr. John Obajinmi, the council expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity facing workers, particularly in the informal sector, and called for urgent action to prevent further occurrences.
“We are deeply saddened by the gruesome attack on a defenseless Igbo woman trader in Ogun State. Such senseless violence has no place in any civil society. We call on the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the statement read.
The NISCN urged authorities to act decisively to not only deliver justice to the victim and her family but also to serve as a deterrent to other criminal elements and restore public confidence in the safety of informal marketplaces and workspaces.
“The safety of every worker, whether in formal employment or the informal sector, must be guaranteed. We expect swift justice and stronger protection mechanisms to secure Nigeria’s workforce,” Dr. Obajinmi added.
The NISCN, as the apex safety body in the country, is committed to coordinating and advocating comprehensive safety and health awareness across all sectors, ensuring that no worker is left behind in the quest for a secure working environment.
