The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed on, barely one year after ascending the throne.
The monarch, who received the staff of office as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, according to Tribune Online.
Oba Olakulehin’s demise comes just two days after he marked his 90th birthday on July 5.
Born in 1935, the late monarch ascended the throne following the death of his predecessor, Oba (Dr) Moshood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, who died on March 14, 2024, at the age of 81.
Before his coronation, Oba Olakulehin held the position of Balogun Olubadan, the head of the warrior line of the Olubadan chieftaincy system.
His death was confirmed by palace sources on Monday morning, though an official statement was still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
Oba Olakulehin was installed by the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, at a ceremony held in Ibadan, the state capital, amid traditional rites and royal fanfare.
His reign, though brief, was marked by efforts to foster peace and unity among the diverse communities of Ibadanland.
