Your Excellency,
On behalf of the National Association of University Students (NAUS), South West Zone, I bring you warm greetings and unwavering solidarity from the Nigerian student community.
As students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) prepare for resumption, we are compelled to bring to your esteemed attention the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of students within and around the university environment, especially in light of recent incidents and tensions that have unsettled the student body and their families.
LAUTECH remains one of the academic prides of Oyo State and Nigeria at large. Its strategic importance as a centre of excellence cannot be overstated. However, the recent rise in cult-related clashes, robbery cases, and general insecurity in the host community has heightened fear and anxiety among students, parents, and other stakeholders. Many now question the safety of returning to campus without proactive intervention.
Your Excellency, the safety of students is a non-negotiable responsibility, and we believe that under your people-centered leadership, timely and effective measures can be deployed to safeguard lives and properties.
We, therefore, respectfully urge your office to:
- Deploy adequate security personnel around LAUTECH and its environs before and during resumption;
- Compel all private hostel owners to employ at least one night watchman or security guard to ensure the safety of students within their facilities;
- Ensure that each major street within and around the LAUTECH community is fitted with luminous streetlights, to enhance visibility and deter criminal activities at night;
- Establish a police post in close proximity to the university campus, to provide rapid response to any security breaches and foster constant police visibility;
- We advise that the numerous abandoned plots of land around the LAUTECH stadium axis be evaluated for possible use in constructing or positioning this police post, as the area is central and strategically located;
- Strengthen collaboration between the state government, local authorities, and the university management to ensure the proper coordination and monitoring of security in student-dominated areas;
- Support the creation of a dedicated student-security liaison unit and an emergency response desk where students can report threats or security concerns with ease.
We trust that your administration, which has consistently prioritized education and youth development, will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves.
Thank you for your continued commitment to the welfare and future of Oyo State students.
Yours in service,
Comrade Tiamiyu Ibraheem Olayinka
