I have been on this social media street for a long time, and most of the time I have been working behind the scenes growing the followership of brands known and unknown to you.
I understand the language expected on X (formerly known as Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok.
Each street with its own gbasgbos. I recalled a few years ago when a particular photographer dragged our brand for publishing the picture he took without putting his name.
Of course, instead of him engaging us directly and forwarding his complaint, he decided to call us out on Twitter and netizens started calling us different names.
The issue was brought to my notice by my online news editor, and I advise that since he requested photo credit publicly, we should quote the said picture and credit him, and we did just that. Gbam!
You know what? Netizen started saying, “What kind of “Gba jesinmi Credit” is this?” This credit is “ Mapa mi”, this one is “ Je ki gbadun” all sorts.
Interestingly, as some were commending our creativity, some were calling us different names. At the end of the day, we recorded a lot of engagement, and our followers increased.
After the gbasgbos, the said picture was republished in the newspaper, and his name was put on it.
Now, to the reason we decided to acknowledge him on Twitter: we did that because he intended to create a crisis for our brand on Twitter but we are smart enough to redirect the narrative to our wall. They no longer respond to his tweets, but now with our content. At the end, there was no victor, no vanquished.
Often, what netizens want to know is that it is the human being that is handling the page, not a robot.
To those familiar with EFCC handles, you will know that it was fun back then. When you asked a funny question, they responded to you in a funny way.
In summary, what we need to understand on this street is that the tone of the dragging will let you know if it is for fun, cruising, or real.
Every tone has its response, language.
