A former Councillor and ex–Supervisor for Works in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Hon. Adedotun Bright Oyekan, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing imposition and disregard for stakeholders as the major reasons for his exit.
Oyekan, who also once served as the Legal Adviser of the party in the local government, said he was left with no choice after what he described as repeated acts of injustice and exclusion by the party leadership.
Speaking on the development, he recalled that during the 2024 local government election process, the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) had issued guidelines assuring a free and fair primary election for chairmanship and councillorship positions.
According to him, the assurance gave aspirants confidence that the process would be transparent.
“As an aspirant, I was confident of victory at the primary. But rather than conduct the promised primary election, the party leaders imposed their candidate. After that, they didn’t even bother to refund my nomination form fees,” Oyekan said.
He further alleged that the disregard for internal democracy resurfaced during the PDP ward congress, where he claimed stakeholders were sidelined.
“The ward congress was another disappointment. Instead of allowing members to choose leaders based on popularity and competence, the process was hijacked. Despite my contributions as a former Councillor, former Supervisor for Works and former Legal Adviser of the party, I was not carried along. The council chairman, who is from my ward, and one other individual simply imposed ward executives on us,” he stated.
Oyekan said the consistent pattern of imposition and exclusion made it clear that the party had no regard for loyal members or democratic processes, prompting his decision to leave
