The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Hon. Aderemi Oseni, unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionise Nigeria’s road infrastructure.
Addressing members at the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja on Tuesday, Oseni recognised the challenges that have plagued FERMA in the past, such as insufficient funding, outdated infrastructure, and bureaucratic obstacles, which have led to deteriorating road conditions, accidents, and economic losses. According to him, the new committee is determined to address these issues head-on.
Oseni, representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, further unveiled a comprehensive 14-point legislative agenda that will serve as a roadmap for the rejuvenation of FERMA and the transformation of Nigeria’s road maintenance. This document, he explained, outlines a strategy to reshape and reengineer FERMA’s operations, calling for the cooperation and input of all committee members..
“As we embark on this journey to revitalise FERMA and address the challenges plaguing road maintenance in Nigeria, it is important to first acknowledge the significance of our role.
“FERMA plays a critical role in ensuring that federal road networks are safe, efficient, and reliable. However, we must also recognise the numerous problems that have hindered FERMA’s effectiveness in the past.
“One of the key initiatives in this agenda is a new approach to oversight functions, with the aim of turning the National Assembly’s ad hoc committee into a collaborative partner with FERMA management. This partnership will focus on improving road maintenance and efficiency in Nigeria, recognising the importance of a professional and knowledgeable committee that prioritises the nation’s best interests,” he said.
The Chairman stressed the need for gradual and sustainable progress, noting that their duty is to leave FERMA better than they found it. He urged the committee members to serve the Nigerian people and improve their lives, guided by the legal frameworks and the Nigerian Constitution.
Oseni also emphasised the importance of cooperation, teamwork, and unity within the committee, encouraging members to work together for the betterment of Nigeria.
Commending members for their commitment to serving the nation as well as acknowledging their diverse expertise, with a shared vision for a better Nigeria, the lawmaker vowed to lead with strategic, open, and inclusive leadership.
