The Ogbomoso Youth for Good Governance (OYFGGM) has raised serious concerns over the rising wave of insecurity in parts of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, calling for immediate and decisive leadership intervention to stem the tide of violence.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the civic group lamented that reports reaching it indicate that since late December, several communities in Oriire Local Government have allegedly been subjected to repeated attacks, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property and heightened fear among residents.
According to OYFGGM, more recent information suggests that the situation has continued to deteriorate, with alleged casualties recorded and at least one community reportedly invaded, further worsening the already fragile security situation in the area.
The group expressed concern over the human and social consequences of the insecurity, noting that families are reportedly being displaced, livelihoods disrupted and entire communities thrown into uncertainty and fear.
The statement which was jointly signed by the Secretary General of the movement, Odewumi Edward, and its Convener, Adediran Abiodun Sunday, reads: “When citizens can no longer sleep with both eyes closed, governance has failed in its most basic responsibility.”
OYFGGM, which described itself as a civic organisation committed to good governance and public accountability, directly called on the political leadership of Oriire Local Government, in collaboration with relevant traditional authorities, to take full responsibility for addressing the situation.
The group stressed that leadership must not remain silent while communities suffer, urging immediate and coordinated action involving security agencies, community leaders and relevant state authorities to halt further escalation of violence.
It further emphasised the need for intelligence-driven security responses, preventive measures and sustained community engagement to restore peace and reassure residents of their safety.
Reiterating its commitment to advocacy for accountable leadership and responsive governance, OYFGGM stated that the protection of lives and property across Ogbomoso zone and Oyo State at large must remain non-negotiable.
