The fierce and dreaded masquerade of ancient Olugbon family in Ogbomoso axis of Oyo State, popularly called ‘Egungun Babalugbon’, on Tuesday, shone, again, in the ongoing Ogbomoso Egungun festival 2022 with large crowd following it across designated axes in the metropolis.
‘Babalugbon, as usual, set out a few minutes to 6p.m. with large turnouts of crowd, including Egungun worshippers, adherents, tourists, among others, following religiously.
There was palpable fear and apprehension as the old and the young as well as children were seen prepared to flee on sighting the legendary ‘Babalugbon’.
Amidst merriment, panegeric renditions of ‘Babalugbon’ rend the air, with skilful performance by traditional drummers of ‘dundun’, ‘omele’, ‘aguda’, ‘iya ilu’ at Olugbon compound, Okeelerin area of Ogbomoso.
It was threatening to hit followers and passers-by with the specially made beaded club in his hand.
Without undermining the importance of the voice of drums, ‘Babalugbon’ took cognizance of the messages of the drums and intermittently ran after people to hit them, with people scampering for ‘safety’.
The itinerary included Okeelerin, Taraa, among others, and back to Okeelerin, the location where nearly all Egungun must thread.
