UI appoints Prof. Ojebuyi CLA HOD, names new heads for Classics, Theatre Arts

The University of Ibadan (UI) has announced new Heads of Departments for Communication and Language Arts (CLA), Classics and Theatre Arts following the expiration of the tenure of the former office holders.
Professor Babatunde Ojebuyi, an Applied Communication and Media Studies scholar, emerged as the Head of the Department of Communication and Language Arts, succeeding Dr. Bisi Olawuyi, who completed his two-year tenure as Acting Head on July 30, 2026.
Also appointed are Professor Monica Aneni as the new Head of the Department of Classics, replacing Professor Emmanuel Taiwo, while Dr. Babatunde Awonsami has assumed office as Acting Head of the Department of Theatre Arts, succeeding Dr. Abimbola Stephen-Adesina.
Speaking during the leadership transition in Ibadan, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Rasheed Olaniyi, described the seamless handover in the three departments as a testament to the faculty’s culture of collaboration and academic excellence.
He lauded academic and non-academic staff as well as students for their support in advancing teaching, research and community service.
Olaniyi singled out the Department of Communication and Language Arts for praise, noting that it recorded remarkable progress under the leadership of the outgoing Acting Head, Dr Olawuyi.
According to him, the department expanded learning resources, improved facilities and created a more conducive learning environment with support from alumni and the university.
“CLA has done well in the last two years. Now they have more resources for students as provided by the alumni and the University,” he said.
The Dean also applauded Dr. Olawuyi’s leadership, describing his contributions to the department’s physical transformation and improved learning environment as commendable.
On the Department of Classics, Olaniyi noted that the appointment of Professor Aneni further reflects the faculty’s growing academic strength, pointing out that she and Professor Ojebuyi are among its recently promoted professors.
He added that the Department of Theatre Arts has also continued to make significant progress, expressing confidence that the new leadership would sustain the momentum.
The Dean equally appreciated the outgoing Sub-Dean (Postgraduate), Dr. Adams Akewula, and the outgoing Sub-Dean (General), Dr. Olugbemiro Berekiah, for their contributions to the development of the faculty.
Their successors are Dr Oluwatoyin Gbadamosi of the Department of Religious Studies as Sub-Dean (Postgraduate) and Dr Francis Amenaghawon of the Department of Communication and Language Arts as Sub-Dean (General).
Olaniyi expressed optimism that the newly appointed departmental heads and sub-deans would build on the achievements of their predecessors and further strengthen teaching, research and academic administration in the Faculty of Arts.
