Nigeria’s Falconets were eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a heartbreaking 1-0 quarter-final loss to Colombia, who scored in stoppage time after the Nigerian side went down to 10 players.
They were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their quarter-final clash in Łódź, Poland.
The Nigerian side looked destined to force the contest into extra time after a disciplined defensive display, but Colombia’s Valerin Loboa struck in the 92nd minute to send the South Americans into the semi-finals.
The first half ended goalless, with both teams creating opportunities in a closely contested encounter. Nigeria came close through Janet Akekoromowei, whose powerful effort rattled the crossbar, while defender Tumininu Adeshina also forced Colombian goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo into a fine save from long range.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card following a VAR review, reducing the Falconets to 10 players for the closing stages of the match.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Falconets defended resolutely and continued to threaten on the counterattack. However, their resistance was finally broken deep into stoppage time when Loboa fired home the decisive goal to end Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the last four.
