AGSOSA holds back-to-school, football match, awards to mark 50th anniversary

Excitement filled the premises of Anglican Grammar School, Ogbomoso, on Friday, as the Anglican Grammar School, Ogbomoso Old Students’ Association (AGSOSA) held a Back-to-School programme, football match, public lecture and awards presentation as part of activities marking the school’s 50th anniversary.
The celebration brought together old students, current students, school management, teachers, parents and other members of the school community to celebrate five decades of the institution’s academic and social impact.
During the Back-to-School programme of the school that metamorphosed into Anglican Grammar School from Anglican Modern School in 1976, held at the school’s assembly ground, President of AGSOSA, Prof. Olugbenga Solomon Bello, urged the students to remain focused on their studies, shun distractions and maintain good relationships with old students who could serve as mentors.
Bello, who told the students that the old students were once in their position, said their prayer was for the current students to surpass their achievements.
“All of us on this side of the assembly, we were once like you and by the grace of God, we are what we are today. Our prayer for you is that you will be greater than us by the grace of God,” he said.
He advised the students to take their studies seriously, warning against distractions capable of jeopardising their future.
“You can only be great if you face your studies. There are a lot of distractions; don’t allow distractions to destroy your future,” Bello said.
He also encouraged the students to interact with old students and share their dreams and aspirations with them in order to benefit from their experience and guidance.
According to him, prayer and hard work were also essential to achieving their aspirations, urging the students to remain prayerful and work towards becoming what God had destined them to be.
Prof. Bello further charged the students to be good ambassadors of Anglican Grammar School wherever they found themselves.
The Principal of the school, Dn. Abiodun Olowe, also urged the students to be disciplined and strive to surpass the achievements of the old students.
Rev’d Michael Oshuneye, chaplain of the school, in his remarks, urged the students to appreciate the opportunities they had and give glory to God.
Quoting Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice,” the Bishop asked the students to reflect on the journey of life and appreciate the grace that had brought them to their present position.
Also speaking, Prof. Elijah Itabiyi, an alumnus of the school, encouraged the students to believe in themselves and remain determined to succeed despite their circumstances.
“I can make it in life,” Itabiyi declared, recounting how he lived with his grandmother while growing up.
He described the school as an important part of his life, noting that he studied and learnt there, while his wife also attended the institution.
The Back-to-School programme featured other speeches and motivational messages aimed at inspiring the students as the school marked five decades of its existence.
The celebration later moved to the football pitch where Anglican Grammar School took on Ogbomoso High School in an entertaining encounter that ended in a 1-1 draw.
The football match added further excitement to the anniversary activities, as students, old students and other members of the school community cheered both teams.
A public lecture and awards presentation were also held as part of the activities, with the events providing opportunities to reflect on the history, achievements and future of the institution.
The activities form part of AGSOSA’s programmes to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Anglican Grammar School, Ogbomoso, and celebrate the legacy of the institution and its products over the past five decades.
