The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that collection of newly issued voter’s cards will commence on October 9, 2026, as part of preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The announcement was made by the Commission’s Chairman, Professor Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, during INEC’s North-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment for the 2027 General Election in Kaduna on Monday.
Amupitan said the Commission was focused on ensuring that eligible Nigerians who completed the voter registration process are able to collect their cards ahead of the 2027 elections.
He called for the elimination of bottlenecks in the distribution process, particularly at the Local Government Area level, to prevent eligible citizens from being disenfranchised because of logistical challenges.
The INEC chairman disclosed that the three phases of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations, subject to verification through the Automated Biometric Identification System.
Earlier, the Supervising National Commissioner for Kaduna, Mallam Kudu Haruna, said the chairman had informed the Emir of Zazzau about the commencement of voter’s card collection during a courtesy visit.
Haruna appealed to traditional rulers to encourage eligible citizens to collect their cards and exercise their constitutional right to vote.
The commencement of voter’s card collection is one of the key activities leading to the 2027 General Election, with INEC urging eligible citizens to take advantage of the exercise once it begins on October 9.
