Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State has appointed Dr. Samuel Oke Ogunniyi, an Associate Preofessor, as its new substantive University Librarian.
Ogunniyi’s appointment, which is for a five-year tenure, takes effect from November 2026.
The appointment adds another chapter to the career of the seasoned librarian, academic and administrator, whose professional journey spans more than three decades in public service, library administration, teaching, research and professional development.
Before his appointment, Ogunniyi was a staff member of Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, where he rose to the position of Associate Professor.
He also served as the immediate past Polytechnic Librarian of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
He is currently the Chairman of the Ondo State Chapter of the Nigerian Library Association (NLA).
Born into a career that has combined public service with academic advancement, Ogunniyi began his education at Saint Finian’s Catholic Primary School, Ute, where he attended between 1972 and 1978. He proceeded to Ute High School, Ondo State, from 1978 to 1983.
He began his civil service career on June 19, 1984, as a Clerical Officer with the National Council for Arts and Culture in Lagos.
His career at the council took him to several national offices, including Abuja, Kaduna and Osogbo, where he gained extensive administrative experience and exposure to Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
Determined to advance his education, Ogunniyi obtained a Diploma in Librarianship from the University of Ibadan between 1988 and 1990.
He subsequently earned his Bachelor’s degree in Library, Archival and Information Studies from the University of Ibadan in 2004, followed by a Master’s degree in the same field in 2006 and a Doctorate in 2015.
He also obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Obafemi Awolowo University in 2010.
Ogunniyi joined Adeyemi College of Education, now Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, in 2007 as Librarian I.
During his years at the institution, he served in several key areas of the library, including Serials, Reference, Project, E-Library, Cataloguing and Classification, contributing to the development and administration of the institution’s library system.
Beyond his core library responsibilities, he participated in several institutional committees, including the Demonstration Secondary School Board, COEASU Journal Committee, Students’ Disciplinary Committee, Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) and ICT Committee.
He also served as Secretary of the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) Review Committee on the Code of Ethics, further demonstrating his involvement in institutional policy, professional ethics and administration.
