The Federal Government has announced a temporary discount on petrol sold at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) stations as part of measures to ease the pressure of rising fuel and transportation costs.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced the measure on Thursday during a press briefing in Abuja on fuel prices and questions surrounding the petrol subsidy.
According to Oyedele, the arrangement will initially last for 30 days, with public transport operators given priority in accessing the discounted petrol across the country.
He explained that the initiative should not be interpreted as a return to the petrol subsidy regime, stressing that the government would instead make the product available at cost.
“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy, government is just saying we sell to you at cost.”
The announcement comes amid continued concerns over the impact of petrol prices on transportation, household expenses and the wider cost of living.
The Federal Government has maintained that its current interventions are intended to provide relief without reversing the broader reforms introduced after the removal of the petrol subsidy.
Oyedele said the temporary discount would specifically prioritise public transporters nationwide, who are directly affected by changes in fuel costs and whose operating expenses can influence transportation fares.
The government is also considering other measures aimed at reducing the effect of volatile global crude prices and exchange-rate movements on domestic petrol prices.
