The Kwara State governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, has emerged as the new Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) chairman.
The decision was reached by consensus during a closed-door meeting of the governors held in Abuja on Tuesday night.
AbdulRasaq will take over from his Sokoto State counterpart, Gov Aminu Tambuwa.
In his acceptance speech, AbdulRasaq pledged to uphold the ideals and vision of NGF.
He said, “I hereby pledge to uphold the ideals and vision of the NGF whilst recognising and appreciating the eminent track record of the institution as a most credible, authoritative, influential and effective inter-party platform for consensus building and peaceful resolution and advancement of pan-Nigeria goals, interests and aspirations.
“l will ensure regular consultation with all members in order to arrive at consensus on all issues for the advancement and promotion of national interest, peace, progress, and stability.
“As a body, we will also continue our tradition of maintaining a close and cordial relationship with the President, the National Assembly, all Federal and State institutions, the business community, the civil society, media, and development partners.”
In the same direction, Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde was appointed as the cice chairman of the forum
Makinde who is from opposition party (PDP) will be assisting the new chairman in affairs of the forum.
Out of the 28 governorship elections contested on March 18, 2023 general elections, APC won in 16 states while PDP had 10 states, Labour Party (LP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) had one state each.
In the domination of representation at the forum’s 36 states, APC has 20 governors to PDP’s 13. All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), LP and NNPP each has a new governor.
It is recalled that AbdulRasaq stalled the announcement of Governor Abdullahi Audu Sule of Nasarawa State as the new NGF chairman during the forum’s last month meeting.
