By Sayo Alagbe
Your Excellency, Sir,
I write to you in my capacity as a former Board Member of Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) with a deep sense of responsibility and concern for one of our sister stations, Gambari, Ogbomoso. This station, which has been a pillar of information dissemination, public engagement, and entertainment in Oyo State, is currently facing dire challenges that threaten its very existence and functionality.
The situation at Ajílété FM has become increasingly untenable due to a confluence of factors, each of which significantly undermines the station’s operations and its ability to serve the public effectively. Below, your Excellent Sir, I earnestly detail the critical issues that require your urgent attention and intervention.
- Lack of a State-of-the-Art Studio and Accessories
The studio of Ajilete FM Station is in a deplorable state. The absence of a modern, state-of-the-art studio is glaring. The current setup is outdated and severely lacks the technological advancements that are standard in the broadcasting industry today. This shortfall not only hampers the quality of broadcasts but also places our station at a significant disadvantage compared to other media houses. The studio’s inadequacies are reflected in poor sound quality, limited production capabilities, and an overall substandard broadcasting experience. - Insufficient and Substandard Seating Arrangements
A fundamental issue contributing to the operational inefficiency at the station is the lack of adequate seating arrangements. The existing chairs are not only insufficient in number but are also in a state of disrepair. Presenters, guests, advertisers, and visitors are often left with no choice but to endure uncomfortable conditions. This lack of decent seating is not merely a matter of comfort; it reflects poorly on the station’s professionalism and can discourage high-profile guests and potential advertisers from engaging with the station - Reliance on Old and Dysfunctional Generators
Another critical issue plaguing the station is the reliance on old and dysfunctional generators. These generators are not only inefficient but also prone to frequent breakdowns, leading to disruptions in broadcasting. The unreliability of the power supply is a significant impediment to the station’s ability to maintain consistent and uninterrupted service. This situation is exacerbated by the fuel scarcity that has become a persistent problem, causing further interruptions in the station’s operations. In the alternative, l beseech the Executive Governor to recommend powering the station with Solar inverter lights, which will ease out the station from fuel consumption - Intermittent Operation Due to Fuel Scarcity
The fuel scarcity issue has had a debilitating effect on the station’s operations. The intermittent nature of the broadcasts, driven by the irregular supply of fuel, has severely crippled the station’s wide reach and acceptability across various parts of Oyo State and neighbouring states. Listeners, who once relied on the station for timely news and entertainment, are now turning away due to the inconsistency. This loss of audience is accompanied by a decline in advertising revenue, as businesses are increasingly reluctant to associate with a station that cannot guarantee reliable service.
- Declining Business Deals and Revenue
The operational challenges faced by Ajilete FM Station have led to a noticeable decline in business deals and advertising partnerships. Advertisers are losing interest in collaborating with the station due to its unreliable broadcasting schedule and poor infrastructure. This decline in business engagements is not just a financial concern but also a reputational one, as the station’s credibility is being eroded. The station’s potential to generate revenue is being severely hampered, which in turn affects its ability to invest in necessary upgrades and improvements.
Your Excellency, the cumulative effect of these issues is driving the station towards an imminent operational halt. The station’s irregular mode of operation, driven by the aforementioned factors, is unsustainable and requires immediate intervention to prevent a total shutdown. The station’s historical significance and its role in providing vital information and entertainment to the people of Oyo State cannot be overstated. Its potential to serve as a medium for government communication, public service announcements, and community engagement is invaluable.
To rescue the station from its current predicament and restore it to its former glory, I humbly propose the following interventions:
- Comprehensive Studio Upgrade: An immediate upgrade of the studio to meet modern broadcasting standards is essential. This includes acquiring state-of-the-art equipment, soundproofing, and enhancing the overall aesthetics to create a professional and inviting environment.
- Provision of Adequate and Comfortable Seating: Ensuring the studio is equipped with adequate and comfortable seating for presenters, guests, advertisers, and visitors is crucial. This will enhance the station’s professional image and improve the overall experience for all stakeholders.
- Replacement of Generators and Stable Power Supply: Replacing the old and dysfunctional generators with new, efficient models will mitigate power supply issues. Additionally, establishing a stable and reliable power supply chain, potentially through renewable energy sources, will ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Securing a Reliable Fuel Supply: Establishing a consistent and reliable fuel supply chain is critical to prevent interruptions in broadcasting. This could involve strategic partnerships with fuel suppliers or exploring alternative energy sources to mitigate fuel scarcity issues.
- Strategic Marketing and Revenue Generation Initiatives: Revamping the station’s marketing strategy to attract new advertisers and business deals is essential. This could involve offering promotional packages, engaging with the business community, and leveraging social media and digital platforms to expand the station’s reach and engagement.
Your Excellency, Ajílété FM Station has been a cornerstone of our state’s broadcasting landscape. Its decline is not just a loss to the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State but to the entire community it serves. The station’s wide reach and its role in providing vital information and entertainment make it an indispensable asset. With your esteemed intervention, we can rejuvenate the station, reclaim its lost glory, and ensure it continues to serve the people of Oyo State with distinction.
I trust that under your capable leadership, these issues will be promptly addressed, and the necessary resources will be allocated to restore the station to its rightful position. Thank you for your time and consideration. I remain hopeful and confident in your commitment to the welfare and development of our state’s media infrastructure.
