The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has emphasised the need to reduce the importation of farm tools and promote local manufacturing for sustainable agricultural development.
NSE President, Margaret Oguntala, made the call at an event preceding the 2024 NSE annual conference, scheduled for Nov. 19.
According to Oguntala, engineers are committed to improving Nigeria’s infrastructure development and providing solutions to the nation’s challenges.
She said the NSE signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Centre for Agriculture and Mechanisation (NCAM) in 2014 to develop farming tools.
Oguntala stressed that investing in local content was crucial, citing the need to support establishments like NCAM and other local tool developers.
She emphasised that importation should only fill deficits, not drive the economy.
Oguntala believed that Nigeria had the capacity to develop its own tools, reducing reliance on imports.
The NSE President also highlighted the importance of developing local content in building citizens’ capacity.
She noted that the 2024 NSE annual conference would focus on pioneering engineering solutions to Nigeria’s climate and food security challenges.
She said the conference would introduce post-harvest innovations, such as solar storage and mobile cold-chain solutions, to reduce food loss and support food security.
Oguntala emphasised the need for the government to prioritise investment in critical sectors, including infrastructure development and renewable energy.
She also advocated for a higher entry point for engineers into the civil service, seeking level 10 instead of the current level nine, citing the rigorous training and expertise required to become a certified engineer.
