The Governing Council Chairman of Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Oyo State, Barrister (Mrs.) Ademubowale Mercy Adelabu, on behalf of the Council and Management, commiserated with the parents, guardians and relatives of the minors who lost their lives due to a stampede during a children’s carnival held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, this week.
Barrister Adelabu also consoled with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakuleyin; Oyo State Governor, His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde and His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the unfortunate and regrettable incident.
Barrister Adelabu, in a communique she personally signed and made available by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Sunday Adepoju, described the incident as a great loss to Ibadan, Oyo State and Nigeria.
Adelabu said, “The unfortunate incident of a stampede during a children’s carnival in Ibadan on Wednesday, 18th December, 2024 caused the death of many children and others. This came as a rude shock to me as the Chairman, Members Of Governing Council, Rector and Principal Officers of Federal Polytechnic Ayede (FEDPA) Oyo State.
“This incident is highly regrettable and painful especially at a time like this. We are, indeed, saddened that an occasion set out to put smiles on the faces of the needy, with inadequate crowd control measures has turned out to put sorrow in the hearts and faces of some beneficiaries.”
“FEDPA Oyo State condemns in strong terms the loss of lives of the innocent children in their prime because this has denied them of possible aspiration to attain their life ambitions. Our heartfelt condolence goes to all the families that lost their loved ones as a result of this avoidable tragedy and we are deeply in a mourning period with the families of the deceased over this grievous experience.
“We commiserate and sympathize with all the affected and encourage the families, relatives and friends of the departed to take solace in the Almighty God. We pray that God of all comfort will comfort the families on all sides and give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.
“More so, we condole with His Excellency Engr, Seyi Makinde, Executive Governor Oyo State, who had to cancel the event of his book launch to mourn with the people. To the government, religious leaders, traditional rulers and people of Oyo state are in mourning period, we pray that the Almighty God will heal our hearts and land quickly.”
Adelabu, therefore, admonished event planners to put adequate measures in place with a view to preventing future occurrences.
“We wish to admonish events planners and programme organizers to put in place adequate measure to prevent future occurrences. We advise that the Police should carryout a detailed investigation to unravel possible causes and apply relevant sanctions as this would forestall a repeat and help to maintain orderliness. May God Almighty grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed. Amen!, she said.
