The Federal Polytechnic Ayede, Ogbomoso, Oyo State has organised a training programme for its newly employed academic staff to strengthen their teaching competence, professional ethics and commitment to academic integrity.
The programme, themed “Strengthening the Teaching Profession and Ethics, Quality Assurance and Assessment Integrity in Higher Education,” focused on teaching professionalism, classroom management, quality assurance and credible assessment practices.
The Rector of the institution, Dr. Isiaka Tunji Adelabu, represented by Director of Special Duties and former acting Rector, Engr. Dr. (Mrs.) Temilola Morufat Adepoju, charged the newly employed academic staff on commitment to professional development.
He added that they should be abreast of new developments in their respective fields.
Adelabu urged the lecturers to take the training seriously, noting that the calibre of resource persons engaged for the programme offered them an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge and insights that would enhance their teaching effectiveness and professional competence.
In his remarks, the acting Director of Quality Assurance, Mr. Sheriffdeen Olatunji Aminu, said the quality of an institution should be measured by the standard of graduates it produces rather than the size of its buildings or the equipment it possesses.
“The quality of an institution does not come from gigantic edifices or the equipment that the institution possesses, but the quality lies in the products they produce. This assertion underpins the philosophical foundation upon which our gathering today rests,” Aminu said.
He described the theme of the programme as timely, noting that it challenged lecturers to reflect on their responsibilities as educators and continually improve the standards and practices of the institution.
“As academics and professionals, we are entrusted with the development of future generations. This responsibility demands competence, discipline, fairness, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the principles of academic excellence,” he added.
Speaking on “Teaching Competence, Ethics, Professionalism and Classroom Management: A Synergy for Effective Teaching Service Delivery,” the Deputy Rector (Academic), Dr. Azeez Olasunkanmi Ojo, identified punctuality, adequate preparation and responsible conduct as essential qualities of effective lecturers.
Dr. Ojo advised lecturers to arrive in their classrooms at least five minutes before the commencement of lectures and prepare adequately for their lessons.
He also urged them to dress appropriately, communicate respectfully with students and avoid abusive or foul language, stressing that professionalism and mutual respect were necessary for effective teaching and learning.
Another resource person, Bldr. Dr. Taliat Ola Yusuf, a Chief Lecturer and Director in the Office of the Rector at the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State, spoke on “Quality Assurance and Academic Integrity in Continuous Assessment and Examination Processes.”
Dr. Yusuf urged the newly employed lecturers to maintain accurate records of students’ attendance, tests, continuous assessments and examinations, noting that proper documentation was essential for accountability and the integrity of academic processes.
He stressed the need for punctuality, adherence to approved curricula and careful marking and recording of examination scripts and results.
He further advised the lecturers to ensure that scores and results were properly verified before being transmitted to the appropriate authorities to prevent errors and safeguard the credibility of the institution’s assessment system.
The programme also included question-and-answer session, during which participants engaged the resource persons on issues relating to teaching practices, professional ethics, quality assurance and examination administration.
