The establishment of any great institution often begins with a small group of visionary leaders who lay the foundation upon which future generations will build. At the Federal Polytechnic Ayede, located in Ogbomoso zone of Oyo State, the pioneer Principal Officers have just completed their historic single tenure of five years this morning, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in the institution’s formative journey.
When the Polytechnic commenced operations, the Federal Government carefully selected a team of seasoned administrators drawn from reputable higher institutions across the country to ensure a solid take-off. The team was led by the Rector, Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed, FNSE from the Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State. He worked alongside a Registrar, Mr. Akin Odesola, drawn from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH); a Bursar from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and the Polytechnic Librarian, Dr. Samuel Oke Ogunniyi, from Adeyemi Federal University of Education.
Their collective experience, administrative discipline, and professional competence gave the institution the stability and direction it needed to grow.
Over the past five years, the pioneer leadership has worked tirelessly to build the Polytechnic from scratch into a functional and promising institution. Under their stewardship, the institution successfully secured approvals and accreditations for several academic programmes, recruited qualified academic and non-academic staff, and established sound administrative structures capable of sustaining growth and efficiency.
In terms of infrastructure, the management oversaw the development of essential facilities needed for teaching, learning, and administration.
Lecture halls, offices, workshops, laboratories, and other supporting facilities gradually emerged within the campus, helping to transform the Polytechnic into a rapidly growing hub for technical and vocational education.
The Rector and his team also strengthened the Polytechnic’s engagement with its host communities and stakeholders in government, industry, and education. These collaborations have opened doors for partnerships, skill development initiatives, and industrial opportunities for students, in line with the Polytechnic’s mandate of producing technically competent graduates.
Indeed, their tenure has been defined by commitment, resilience, and shared vision to see the institution succeed. From the early days of planning and institutional structuring to the steady growth now being witnessed, the pioneer Principal Officers have demonstrated that purposeful leadership can build a lasting legacy.
It is important to note that while the institution will continue to have many Principal Officers in the years ahead, these distinguished administrators will forever occupy a unique place in history as the pioneers who first carried the responsibility of leadership at the Federal Polytechnic Ayede. Their efforts represent the first building blocks upon which future administrations will continue to expand and improve.
Under the watch of the Rector and other Principal Officers, Federal Polytechnic Ayede has pursued deliberate, measurable development anchored on infrastructure, research, staff capacity, and partnerships. Within a short period, the Polytechnic has successfully executed sixty-eight (68) major infrastructural, utility, ICT, and equipment projects across its Permanent Campus in Ayede and Temporary Campus at Iresaapa. These projects were funded through a combination of TETFund Annual, Zonal, ICT, Take-Off and Special High-Impact Interventions, Federal Government Capital Appropriations, support from Federal Ministries, institutional consult initiatives, and philanthropic donations.
At the Permanent Site, completed TETFund- and Capital-funded projects include the Main Administrative Building, Twin Departmental Building, Health Centre, Gate Houses, Urban and Regional Planning Building, ICT Centre, Mechanical Workshop, Mini Library, boreholes, 11KVA Power Infrastructure, internal roads, Six Utility Vehicles, classrooms, staff offices, and support facilities. Major ongoing projects include the Main Library, Multi-Skills Acquisition Centre, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Building, Electrical/Electronics Laboratories, 33KVA power installation, supply of electrical laboratory equipment, and an ambulance, largely funded by TETFund Annual and Special High-Impact Projects.
At the Temporary Site, the Polytechnic has delivered projects such as a 230-capacity auditorium (TETFund), administrative buildings and road infrastructure (Federal Ministry of Works), office complexes (Polytechnic Consults), renovation of Science Laboratory Technology laboratories, Career Service Centre, public conveniences, boreholes, solar installations, and extensive ICT and digitalisation upgrades, funded through TETFund, Capital Appropriation, Overhead votes, and special interventions.
In addition, the Polytechnic has benefitted from notable donor-supported projects, including the Forestry Building donated by Prof. Adesola Adepoju, lecture halls donated by Alhaji Monsur Ejide, Pa Festus Ajani and Alhaji Alimi Sarumi, office equipment donated by the Ogbomosoland Consultative Council, 2-years rent free Staff Quarters donated by Senator Hamzat Ayoade Adeseun and a ₦1 million cash donation by the Pivotal Club Ogbomoso, used for the renovation of the Adeseun ICT Centre, now deployed for Polytechnic academic use. These donations underscore strong community ownership and stakeholder confidence in the institution.
Beyond infrastructure, the Polytechnic has recorded strong performance in research and innovation. To date, over sixty-four (64) Institution-Based Research (IBR) projects have been successfully carried out across disciplines, alongside nine (9) completed TETFund-funded fabrication projects, including machines for agriculture, construction, food processing, electronics, and digital manufacturing. These outputs reinforce the Polytechnic’s applied research mandate and industry relevance.
Staff capacity development has equally been prioritised. During the period, fifteen (15) academic staff have benefitted from TETFund PhD and MSc scholarships in Nigerian universities, while over one hundred and ninety (190) staff members have benefitted from local and international conferences, workshops, and specialised professional trainings across Nigeria, Africa, Europe, Asia, and the United Kingdom. This sustained investment in human capital has strengthened teaching quality, research output, administrative efficiency, and institutional resilience.
In recognition of the importance of structured engagement and industrial harmony, the Rector also inaugurated three staff unions on campus, namely the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), thereby entrenching orderly representation, dialogue, and institutional stability.
In the area of sports and student development, the Polytechnic steadily built a culture of participation and excellence. The institution recorded podium finishes at the 21st Nigerian Polytechnic Senior Staff Games (NIPOSSGA), successfully organised the Maiden and Second Editions of the Rector’s Cup Football Competition, created a temporary sports field for regular training and competitions, and made its first official appearance at the Nigerian Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA) on observer status. These achievements reflect our commitment to holistic education that promotes teamwork, discipline, physical fitness, and community engagement alongside academic pursuits.
Taken together, these achievements reflect prudent utilisation of public funds, effective engagement with funding agencies and donors, and a clear institutional vision. They provide a solid physical, intellectual, and human foundation upon which Federal Polytechnic Ayede will continue to grow, innovate, and serve national development in the years ahead.
As they concluded their historic tenure, the Polytechnic community extends heartfelt appreciation and best wishes to them in their future endeavours. Their service to the institution and to the development of technical education in Nigeria deserves recognition and celebration.
However, as they step into a new phase of their professional and personal journeys, they are also encouraged not to rest on their oars. Their wealth of experience, leadership capacity, and commitment to educational development remain valuable assets to the nation. There are still many opportunities for them to continue contributing to institutional growth, national development, mentorship, and the advancement of technical and vocational education.
The legacy of the pioneer Principal Officers of the Federal Polytechnic Ayede will remain indelible. History will remember them not only as administrators who served their tenure, but also as trailblazers who laid the foundation for what promises to become one of Nigeria’s thriving centres of technological education. Their story is a reminder that great institutions are built by visionary individuals who are willing to serve with dedication, courage, and a clear sense of purpose.
