The maiden edition of the West Africa Para Games kicked off on Friday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with Team Nigeria recording an emphatic 11–0 victory over Benin Republic in amputee football.
The match, staged at the MKO Abiola Stadium as part of the opening ceremony, saw Nigeria dominate from start to finish. Usman Ahmed Tijani led the scoring with four goals, while Michael Akachi and Daniel Tochukwu each scored three. Ibrahim Ndako added another to complete Nigeria’s commanding win.
The opening ceremony featured a march-past involving all participating countries as well as a cultural display showcasing Ogun State’s rich heritage. With this event, Ogun State has officially become the first host of the West Africa Para Games.
Declaring the games open, President of the Africa Paralympic Committee, Samson Deen, commended Nigeria and Ogun State for hosting the inaugural edition, describing the effort as a landmark achievement for para sports in the sub-region.
President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, Sunday Odebode, also expressed gratitude to the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their support in making the hosting possible.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, who witnessed Team Nigeria’s opening match, said the Commission was proud to align with a competition that reinforces the resilience and strength of people living with disabilities.
