What was once regarded as the most feared and, perhaps, the most troublesome set in the history of Awoyemi Commercial High School, Okeho has today emerged as one of the most successful, united, and impactful alumni associations within its immediate community.

This inspiring revelation came to the fore during the colourful 2nd Annual Get-Together and Reunion of the Awoyemi Commercial High School 1998 Set held at the school’s hall in Okeho where old classmates reunited after nearly three decades to celebrate friendship, achievements, and the enduring bond that has kept them together.
Addressing members and guests at the event, the pioneer President of the association, Hon. Ismaheel Abiola AbdWaasii, reflected on the incredible journey of the set, describing it as a testimony to the power of perseverance, mentorship, unity, and divine grace.

According to him, the 1998 set was famously known during their secondary school days by several intimidating descriptions. They were tagged as the “36 Lions,” the most dangerous, most fearful, and most populous set ever produced by the school. Yet, despite the notoriety that surrounded them as students, some dedicated teachers and school administrators never gave up on them.
Hon. AbdWaasii
paid glowing tributes to some of the teachers and mentors who believed in the future of the students when many others doubted them. He specifically acknowledged Baba Shittu M. A. Odofin, Baba Pomu, Ustadh Dapo Yusuf, Mr. Oke Malu, Mr. Alabi, Mr. Osin, Iya Adetona, and the then Principal, the late Mr. Oladeji, for their patience, commitment, guidance, and unwavering faith in the students.

“Although our set was widely regarded as the most troublesome and feared in the history of the school, these great teachers never discarded us. They saw beyond our youthful exuberance and believed we could become responsible leaders and productive members of society. Today, we are living proof that their labour was not in vain,” he stated emotionally.
The reunion became even more inspiring as members reflected on the outstanding accomplishments recorded by their classmates over the years.
The same class once described as “dangerous” has now produced barristers-at-law, officers of the Department of State Services (DSS), seasoned accountants and auditors, medical doctors, university lecturers in some of prestigious Federal Universities across Nigeria, accomplished teachers, captains of industry, successful entrepreneurs, chief imams, reverend sisters, evangelists, and respected traditional medicine practitioners.
Perhaps most remarkably, the set’s former Senior Prefect, Mr. Wasiu Kazeem Olasupo, now works with one of the largest industries in Australia, a development that drew admiration and applause from attendees.

Observers at the event noted that the transformation of the 1998 Set stands as a powerful reminder that youthful mischief does not necessarily determine future destiny. With proper guidance, discipline, and determination, individuals can rise above stereotypes and become agents of positive change.
Beyond individual achievements, the association itself has become a model for alumni engagement and community service. In the last two years, the group has fostered unity among members, organized successful annual reunions after 28 year of graduation, provided educational materials to their alma mater, supported members through welfare and business empowerment initiatives, organized online lectures on health, security, law, economic empowerment, and education, and maintained a robust welfare system for members.
The administration led by Hon. AbdWaasii has continued to receive commendations from various quarters. Many stakeholders have described the Awoyemi Commercial High School 1998 Set as one of the most coordinated, organized, and dedicated alumni associations within the community.
Speaking further, Hon. AbdWaasii attributed the success of the association to unity, mutual respect, collective responsibility, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of members.
“Our story is not just about a reunion. It is about transformation, friendship, loyalty, and the triumph of hope over stereotypes. We have proven that no individual or group should be judged permanently by their youthful mistakes. Today, the same set once feared by many has become a source of pride to our school, our families, and our community,” he said.
As laughter, memories, and heartfelt emotions filled the hall, one message resonated strongly among participants: the true measure of a person’s life is not where they started but where they eventually arrive.
The gathering ended with prayers for continued unity, progress, and prosperity among members, while participants expressed optimism that future generations of Awoyemi Commercial High School students would draw inspiration from the extraordinary journey of the Class of 1998.
Indeed, from “36 Lions” to respected professionals and community builders, the story of Awoyemi Commercial High School 1998 Set remains a shining example that greatness can emerge from the most unexpected places.
