The National Sports Commission (NSC) has appointed seasoned sports administrator, Dr. Oluwatoyin Aluko, as the President of the Nigeria Netball Federation (NNF), in a move aimed at strengthening the structure and development of netball in Nigeria.
The appointment was announced on Wednesday by the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who described the decision as a strategic step towards establishing a sustainable framework for the growth of netball across the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Acting Director, Information and Public Relations of the NSC, Dr. Kehinde Ajayi, the Director General noted that netball remains one of the fastest-growing sports globally, with Nigeria boasting a significant number of professional players excelling in the sport within the diaspora.
According to the statement, the appointment aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to build a sustainable sports economy by creating a well-organised system that enables Nigerians at home and abroad to proudly represent the country in their respective sports.
The statement further revealed that findings by the Commission indicate that over 30 Nigerians are currently active players in top netball leagues across Europe and South Africa, presenting Nigeria with an opportunity to build a formidable national team capable of enhancing the country’s podium strength.
“Dr. Aluko is a former netball player who understands the sport in-depth. Her appointment marks a significant step forward, and the Commission will, in the coming days, announce the full composition of the federation’s board,” the statement added.
Aluko is a former national netball player and currently serves as President of the Association of Former Female Athletes of Nigeria (AFFAN).
She is an accomplished athlete, coach, and sports administrator with over 45 years of experience in sports development.
The NSC expressed optimism that her leadership would usher in a new era of growth and international competitiveness for netball in Nigeria.
