As concerns continue to trail the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Oyo State Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Prof. AbdulRahmon Afonja, has called for stronger collaboration among critical stakeholders in the governance and security sectors.
Prof. Afonja stated this on Tuesday during a tour of the affected communities, stressing the need for urgent measures to curb insecurity in the council area.
Speaking at a military base in Ahoro-Esinele, Afonja appealed for the provision of social amenities in Esinele, Ahoro-Esinele, Yawota, Alawusa and other communities in Oriire Local Government Area.
He lamented that the poor communication network in the affected communities contributed to the attack, noting that residents were unable to quickly reach security operatives during the incident.
Pan-Nigerian News reports that residents of the communities broke down in tears during the visit as emotions continued to trail the abduction.
It would be recalled that a secondary school principal, teachers, and pupils from both primary and secondary schools are still being held captive by the abductors.
While commending Prof. Afonja for the visit and support, the Elesinele of Esinele, Chief Tajudeen, appealed for stronger government intervention to secure the release of the victims.
Also speaking on behalf of the Yawota community, Emmanuel Alade pleaded with relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts toward the safe return of the abductees.
“We appeal to various stakeholders to ensure the safe return of the abducted teachers and pupils. Should parents now be afraid of sending their children and wards to school?” he said.
