The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) has confirmed the killing of a teacher and the abduction of some pupils following an attack on two schools in Ahoro-Esinele Community, Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred at LA School, Ahoro-Esinele, and Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele, leaving residents in fear as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped pupils.
In a press release issued on Friday, the Executive Chairman of OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, described the incident as “a dark and painful moment for our education family in Oyo State.”
“Our hearts are with the affected parents, teachers, and the entire community,” Adeniran said.
The Board noted that the exact number of abducted pupils had yet to be confirmed, as security operatives were still combing the affected areas and gathering full details of the attack.
“As we speak, the accurate number of pupils kidnapped is yet to be ascertained, as security agencies continue to comb the affected areas and establish full details of the incident,” the statement read.
Dr. Adeniran stated that OYOSUBEB, in collaboration with the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, is working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the pupils.
He disclosed that security operatives, under the direct coordination of the Commissioner of Police, had already deployed a tactical response team to the area.
“A tactical response team has been deployed, and all necessary intelligence and operational measures are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the pupils and to restore peace to the community,” he stated.
As part of precautionary measures, the Board directed all primary schools in neighbouring communities, including Surulere, Oyo East, Oriire, and Olorunsogo, to vacate their schools immediately until further notice.
According to the statement, the temporary closure became necessary “to prevent any secondary incidents and to allow security agencies to thoroughly stabilise the area.”
Appealing to parents and community leaders to remain calm, Adeniran said the government would not abandon the affected children.
“We understand your fears. But we want to reassure you, your children will not be abandoned, and this government will not rest until every child is safely returned,” he said.
The Board also mourned the slain teacher, describing his death as a painful loss to the education sector.
OYOSUBEB further urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, while assuring the public that updates would be provided as new developments emerge.
