
The Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, has restated its commitment towards ranking among the 100 top universities in the world.
The university also defended the award of first-class honours degrees to 94 out of 11,528 graduating students this year, stating that the first class graduates meet global academic standards.
The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rasaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu, said this on Tuesday at a press conference marking the university’s 17th Convocation Ceremony and 35th Founders’ Day anniversary.
Kalium maintained that the university has continued to institutionalise its operations in research as well.as staff students exchange.
Speaking on the current ranking of LAUTECH, Kalilu said, “It is noteworthy that the university’s rating a d ranking has been on continuous ascent since 2023. In 2025, in the Times Higher Education’s World University Ranking, it retains its position as the best state university in Nigeria.
“In a similar development, the 2025 Interdisciplinary Science Ranking, which stressed universities’ contributions to and engagement with interdisciplinary science, ranked LAITECH second position nationally and within the 251 – 300 bracket globally.”
Kalilu, who emphasised that vision of the institution is to be among the to 100 universities across the world, said measures are in place to achieve the feat.
“Our vision is to be among the top 100 universities globally. This is a tall ambition, but is possible.
“In the face of this vision, and the evr-growing student enrolment, it is imperative that we improve our infrastructure, introduce more technologies into our pedagogy and research systems, and internationalise our staff and students mix among other and important steps required,” the professor of art and art history stated, adding that time frame of actualising the goal had just begun.
The Ogbomoso-born scholar harper that the performance of LAUTECH graduates in the labour market affirms the quality of education they received, adding that their competence in both private and public sectors proves the credibility of the institution’s academic output.
“If you have followed the trajectory of our products, they are one of the hardnut that can not be easily cracked,” he said.
He explained that the university continued to run academic programmes in 13 faculties, but the 11, 528 graduands of this year are products of twelve faculties.
“Of this number, 8,102 graduands will be admitted to the bachelor’s degrees. Out of this figure, 94 graduands are in the First Class division, 2,086 graduands in the Second Class Upper division, 3,494 graduands in the Second Class Lower division, 756 graduands in the Third Class division and 12 in ordinary Pass.
“For the Nursing Science, 7 are in Distinction, 1741 are in Upper Credit, and 145 in Lower Credit. For Medicine and Surgery, there are 133 in the Pass category, which indicates a satisfactory level of success in the discipline, unlike in non-medical disciplines.
“It is my pleasure to inform you that Adeladun Badirat Adeduntan who is graduating with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.86 from the Department of Science Laboratory Technology, Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences is the overall best graduating student, and she will be awarded the prize during this Convocation on April 22”, he said.
Kalilu said the week long activities for this year’s Convocation will include research fair and exhibition, as well as convocation play and cultural performance.
Others include convocation lecture and alumni day, church service, while award of first degrees and prizes will take place on Tuesday, 22nd of April, 2025, followed by award of postgraduate diplomas and higher degrees on 23rd of April, 2025.
